They become involved for a variety of reasons: to meet new people, to \u201cmake a difference\u201d by contributing to their community, or to accompany their children who are already involved in the garden. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major components of any volunteer management program are to: <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly define the roles of those who volunteer.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify and recruit people who have the interest and enthusiasm to move the school garden forward. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select and place volunteers in roles that will match their skills and availability with the program\u2019s needs. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orient volunteers to the overall goals of the project. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Train volunteers in specific skills, knowledge, and goals of the project.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize and appreciate their contributions. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluate performance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide useful feedback. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Volunteer Tasks and Sources <\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When recruiting volunteers be sure to establish expectations of what they will be doing.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible volunteer tasks include: <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizing a parent\/student workday on a Saturday. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping build raised beds. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installing an irrigation system. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laying brick, blocks, or stepping stones. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping build a storage shed. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designing a garden bulletin board or newsletter. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planning a harvest festival. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer sources might include: <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents, grandparents, and community members. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local scouting groups. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High schools, service groups, and local garden clubs. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farm Bureau and farmers&#8217; markets. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurseries and garden centers. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior centers. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Gardeners.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older students. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Training Volunteers<\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteers will need an orientation to the school and to the garden. They will need basic information such as where to park, how to sign in, how to find the restrooms, and where tools are stored. \u00a0You will also need to provide training in the specific tasks they will be performing with the students and how to involve students in decision making such as which seeds to plant, where to plant, etc. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Thanking Volunteers<\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one school, families made contributions to fund building raised beds.
