Great Plants, Great Prices, at the Master Gardener Plant Sale June 18 in Balboa Park

plant sale

Want to grow your own bananas? Want a tree with roots in San Diego’s horticultural history? Want a trouble-free native ground-cover?

Look for these and hundreds of other great plants at great prices at the annual Master Gardener Plant Sale Saturday, June 18, in Room 101 of Casa del Prado in Balboa Park.  Sale hours are 10 a.m. until 3p.m.

Gardeners with a taste for edibles will want to add one of our 3-gallon banana trees to their landscape. Several varieties of strawberries also will be for sale. History lovers won’t want to miss cork oak trees from the Balboa Park nursery founded by famed horticulturist Kate Sessions. And native plant fans will snap up 4-inch pots of Iva hayesianna ground cover.

Want to enlarge your succulent collection? Hundreds will be for sale. And if you want to know how to grow them, ask one of the many Master Gardeners on hand who will happily  answer questions.

The same is true for other plants on sale - vegetable and herb plants, bromeliads, water lilies, rare sages, staghorn ferns, sago palms, waterwise perennials and flowering annuals, to name a few grown by Master Gardeners or donated by local specialty nurseries and growers.

Master Gardeners can help you pick the right plants for your garden and offer tips for their care.

At the Master Gardener Marketplace, birdhouses handcrafted by Master Gardeners will be on sale. Available in a variety of sizes and styles, they are stylish additions to any garden. If you’d like to learn more about attracting birds, butterflies and other wildlife to your garden, Master Gardeners will be happy to help.

New this year are planted living walls, as well as kits for planting them.
Other garden related items for sale include arm-protecting gauntlets, tool sharpeners, and crystal totems, all handcrafted by Master Gardeners and sure to appeal to the most discriminating shopper.  (Please note: the coupon does not apply to these items, living walls or kits, or birdhouses.)
Master Gardeners also will staff exhibits, located on the Casa del Prado patio, to help you make your garden thrive. There will be information on

  • Attracting birds and butterflies to your garden
  • Identifying insect friends and foes in your garden
  • Safe pest control
  • Landscaping tips to help defend homes from wildfires
  • Composting how-tos
  • Tomato, avocado and citrus tree care
  • Identification of invasive plants
  • Sustainable gardening
  • How to make your garden more drought tolerant.

At the always popular "Ask A Master Gardener" booth, Master Gardeners will answer any questions concerning home gardening and pest management.

Plant and other purchases must be paid with cash or check only. Proceeds benefit Master Gardeners’ educational programs throughout the county.

Shoppers are urged to take advantage of free parking in Balboa Park and free tram service to the sale. Click here for lots and tram stops.
